The Wedge
The Wedge was used
by legionaries on attack. The soldiers formed a triangle with one man as the
tip facing the enemy. The Wedge allowed smaller groups of soldiers to get
deep into enemy lines. When a lot of these ‘Wedges’ were in position they
expanded making the enemy restricted into smaller, tighter positions. This
created hand to hand combat irrelevant, and the roman soldiers were able to
stab the enemy with their short gladius’.
