The Goths

The Goths were an East Germanic tribe that, according to their own traditions, originated from Scandinavia. They migrated south and conquered parts of the Roman Empire. Two relative tribes that stayed in Scandinavia were treated as Goths, but referred to themselves as two different peoples the Geats and the Gotlanders. The Goths that migrated south were a united tribe until the 3rd century when they split into the eastern Goths or Ostrogoths and the western Goths or the Visigoths.
